subject: Opening Our Eyes On Fosamax Problems [print this page]

One of the most popular drug that has around 37 million prescriptions written is the biphosphonate medicine called Fosamax. Right now, this drug is being relegated to a big issue after a significant number of its long-time users reported experiencing femur fractures. While additional studies uncover the other effects of this drug, it was found out that Fosamax can help prolong the life span of prosthetics.

Doctors in the United Kingdom have followed up on some 42, 000 patients who have been implanted with artificial hip joints and prescribed with Fosamax. A study published in the British Medical Journal reported that hip failures and other problems were less likely to occur among these patients.

Men and women have been prescribed with Fosamax as a treatment for their osteoporosis, which are mostly caused by menopause or steroid intake. It is also a treatment for Paget's Disease of the bone, a condition in which the bones are weakened and misshapen. People with osteopenia are also prescribed with this drug. Osteopenia is a person experiencing poor bone mineral density.

Fosamax therapy have been reported for its drug-to-drug interaction issues. At present the possibility of other drugs contributing to the Fosamax femur fractures is under thorough investigation.

Aside from the intended impact, Fosamax also has a number of unintended side effects, some of which are beneficial while some are adverse.Nonetheless, because of its positive and negative side effects, off-label use of the drug is not advisable.

Unintended Effects of Fosamax

Medical attention must immediately considered if allergic reactions such as rash, hives, and difficulty breathing happens following the use of this drug. If medical attention is not sought, things can lead to the following:

chest pain

difficulty swallowing (dysphagia) or painful swallowing (odynophagia)

burning sensation under the ribs or in the back

severe heartburn, burning pain in your upper stomach (epigastric area)

fever, body aches, flu-like symptoms

severe joint, bone, or muscle pain

new or unusual pain in the hip or thigh

jaw pain, numbness or swelling.

Among Fosamax patients, less serious side effects can occur such as:

mild heartburn

bloating

mild nausea, vomiting or stomach pain

diarrhea, gas or constipation

mild joint pain or swelling

swelling in your hands or feet

dizziness

eye pain

headache

The decision to undergo Fosamax therapy should only be done with your doctor's order and after obtaining complete information, including the duration of therapy to prevent adverse results, like femur fractures. A Fosamax lawsuit is currently being filed by many people due to these adverse effects.
