subject: The Benefits Of Water Purification [print this page]

Water purification is a hot topic as more and more people seek to remove contaminants from their drinking water and bathing water. Many people choose water purification in the form of a water station in their home that filters out the harmful substances before they come out of your faucets. The exact type of water purification system you choose is up to you.

Budget, personal beliefs and lifestyle will all be a factor in your decision. Some water purification systems will catch more pathogens and bacteria than others, but all will off benefits to your overall health. The choices range from simple filters that attach to your taps all the way to complex, multi-stage filtering systems that pass the water over more than one filter. Research the industry and the different water products thoroughly, so when you add a new water station to your home, it's the right one and your family receives the benefits that are important to you.

Municipal water often takes on the faint odour of chlorine, and this, combined with various bacteria can make your drinking water taste and smell unpleasant. One benefit of a water purification system is that it removes this odor and taste, leaving your drinking water tasting cleaner. It also reduces the amount of chlorine that enters your body through your mouth and skin, which some believe isn't conducive to good health. Lead is another contaminant that you don't want in your drinking water that a point-of-use water station can remove just before you drink the water.

While some water purification systems can prove costly, over time you will notice a cost benefit, as you no longer have to purchase bottled water. Over the course of even one year, a family of four can go through hundreds of bottles of water, and while each individual bottle may not seem like much, the cumulative expense is high. When you add the environmental impact of not using that many plastic bottles, the benefit of the water purification system is quite glaring. The convenience of being able to simply turn on your tap and get clean drinking water anytime you want is enough of a benefit for many people to make the switch. The water you use for steaming vegetables, cooking rice or pasta and even watering your plants will also be free and clean of toxins.

Despite the savings and convenience, the health issue probably offers the greatest benefit to installing some sort of water station in your home. Aside from chlorine, lead, fluoride and other contaminants being removed from your home's water supply, filters such as a solid block carbon water filter also keep healthy mineral deposits in the water that balance out the pH of your drinking water. Bacteria such as cryptosporidium and giarda that are responsible for gastrointestinal ailments are removed through water purification, which is an even greater benefit for children or the elderly. When a child's immune system is still immature and developing, it's nice to know you have water products in place that are keeping the water clean and free from harm.
