subject: Simpsons, One Comedy Sitcom You Should Never Miss [print this page]

There has never been a day when I had missed watching the animated show called Simpsons. Whether I am stuck at meetings or shopping, I make sure to record it on my DVR that came with Verizon FiOS TV.

Simpsons is a sitcom about a typical middle class American family that lives in a fictional town called Springfield. The family members consist of Homer Simpson, an idiot, easy going, loving husband and father who works at the Springfield Nuclear Power plant; Marge Simpson, a loving mother and a typical stereotype American women; Bart the eldest son, a naughty, daredevil, trouble creator; Lissa, the nerdy daughter, who is a PETA member and a school-topper; Maggie the baby daughter, who rarely speaks and is one-year-old.

The humor and the antics of this family have been entertaining millions of viewers for many years. Even though this dysfunctional family may not be like a typical American family, but we just forget the character flaws and enjoy their daily life activities where Homer being the one, is the most amusing. His character when compared to a typical American father is different. Homer believes that what he does is right and does not like his authority and decisions to be questioned. He spends his free times at the bar with his friends rather than with his kids but unlike a typical loving father, he tries to strangulate his son Bart whenever he creates trouble. This does not mean he hates his son as in most episodes he is the one who instigates his son Bart to do all kinds of mischief.

Somewhat we may feel that Barts rebellious and daredevil character comes from his fathers genetics. Bart like his father is not stupid, but makes sure that people know his father is an idiot. In some episodes, he creates situations where people of Springfield see his fathers stupid antics and make sure that he becomes a laughing stock. But that does not stop Homer from doing what he believes is right. For example, in one episode Homer goes on a fasting strike in order to avoid the Springfield baseball team to be taken over by a corporate food company. He starves until he loses his weight, but never gives up his strikes. At the end the mayor of Springfield decides not to sell the baseball team to the corporate company after seeing Homers dedication.

The antics of Homer have not only affected his family, but also on his job. In many episodes, Homer is shown being fired from work because of his laziness and miscreant behavior. He even does a lot of temporary job, but still somehow gets back to his old job at the end of the episode. In one episode, he takes the place of Mr. Burns, the owner of the Springfield Nuclear Power plant and ends up in creating an utter chaos. He follows all kinds of unethical work methods, resulting in creating a financial loss for the Nuclear Power plant. Even his family life gets affected, as his wife and children miss him. Bart becomes sad as most of his friends dad would be practicing baseball with their sons and his father would be making irresponsible business decisions at the Nuclear Power plant.

There was one episode where the careless tactics of Homer almost results in losing his life. During one of his office jokes, he makes fun and pulls the leg of his colleague, which results in the colleague becoming the laughing stock of the office. The colleague not able to bear this humiliation dies and his son tries to avenge his fathers death. The son tries many ways to kill Homer by removing the brakes of his car, shooting him while at work etc. Ultimately Homer gets saved in the nick of the time with the help of Lisa and Sideshow Bob.

Some of us may have or seen such kind of dysfunctional family. What makes this dysfunctional family called Simpsons close to our heart is that everyone is so caring about each other, no matter how mad they are.
