subject: Hire the Eyes of Fire [print this page] Here's a candidate appearing for an interview session. Maybe:
He looks sharp
He sounds smart
He is bursting with energy
He knows his stuff
Has the right experience and
He comes with the right price
But, he is not the best if one thing is missing
A life purpose and a life plan
That's right, if he doesn't understand the meaning of his life and the purpose of him doing the work you want him to do, then he will never be at his best. If you hire a capable individual and 3 months later he starts asking himself "why am I even doing this?" or "what's the use?", then you have lost him and he will leave. Or he will stay and torment his manager till his manager comes up to you and gives you the dirty job of firing him.
You see, you will only get the best work out of someone if he sees that what he wants to achieve in life is parallel to what you want him to do. When life purpose and work goes in the same direction, it results in happiness, the tenacity to do whatever it takes and the creativity in looking for impossible solutions. It is everything you need in a perfect employee.
In fact, I'm willing to bet that even if:
He lacks technical skill
He lacks the experience
He lacks confidence and
He lacks the grooming
If he has purpose and passion on his side, he'll conquer any challenges that he faces and make you proud.
So stop hiring chair warmers, cubicle occupiers and clock watchers. Hire the eyes of fire and watch them burn a path through dense impassable jungles for you.
