subject: Checking Your Home For Water Leaks [print this page]

Most living things especially humans need water every day. Water keeps us energized and hydrated for a days activity. Some of us drink directly on the faucet while others get water from home water coolers. As long as you make sure the water is potable then it wont matter where you get it. Cost of living today is higher than before and this includes the high cost of water bill.

Some of us are experiencing difficulty in paying our water bill and we try to conserve water as much as we can. On the other hand, there are those that dont care how much they pay for their water. Come to think of it, water loss would not only mean higher water bill but can also result to structural damage. If there is a water leak, you will pay more than what you have to pay and if that happens you need to find out how to solve this and repair the water leaks.

Checking water leaks must be done not just to conserve water but to avoid damaging your home and paying a higher cost of water bill. By following these simple tips blow you can check for water leaks and avoid water loss.

Begin by checking your meter outside. Check the line running from the house going out to the meter box. Then, close all water sources, faucets and pressure valves. Observe the movement of the meter. If the meter turns, then there is probably a water leak between the meter and your house. But if its not moving, then the leak can be within the home or in the toilet.

To know if the water leak comes from the toilet, remove the cover of toilets tank and listen for a hiss sound. Know where it is coming from then fix it. If you think it is impossible to fix by your own, then seek assistance from a plumber. If you can find water leaks before you call a plumber, you will pay less for the labor fee because less time will be spent for the plumbing.

If you dont hear any hissing sound but you feel that the water leak is on the toilet, add coloring on the tank and observe whether the water inside the bowl changed color. If it does, then the leak is there. Wait for about 10 minutes and continue observing for the color might still change and slow water leaking is possible.

If you have a hot water tank at home, check the pressure valve and the drain pipe. If the drain pipe is difficult to remove, the water leak might possibly be on that part.

Now, if you still can find the water leak and it is not on your toilet, lines outside and hot water tank, then check all hoses, sprinklers and faucets including your irrigation system. Listen for a hissing sound and fix the problem right away.

If in case you really cant find the water leaks, then you should give up and ask help from a professional. It is really normal to experience difficulty in finding water leaks. While getting your line fixed, you can drink water from home water coolers and have nothing to worry about. It is better to fix water leaks immediately than water for your bill to balloon.
