subject: Colleges For Learning Disability Students Are Needed [print this page] Students with learning disabilities are already placed at a disadvantage at the hands of their disability. Unfortunately, they face further difficulty when it comes to finding suitable tertiary education venues. Even though they do exist, they are rare and colleges for learning disability students are still very much a need.
With the exception of specific laws pertaining to certain countries, generally, all learning institutes must by law accommodate for the disadvantaged. Most schools and tertiary institutions do try to comply by these laws to the best of their ability. Some schools for instance, may have a special group that is taught separately to the rest of the class, or they may have extra classes outside of normal teaching hours for special needs learners.
However, some students require more than others. There are many different types of learning disabilities. Some of these include dyslexia and ADHD. They can range from severe to minor developmental problems.
A normal educational establishment may be able to accommodate for learners with moderate problems with specialized teachers and extracurricular lessons. Unfortunately, they simply cannot cater for people with more severe learning illnesses. They require more personal one on one attention and assistance.
Places of higher education with these specific facilities do exist in most countries, but make up the minority. In some countries there is only less than 1 percent. With more and more learning conditions emerging with scientific research, more special needs educational facilities are in demand.
Disadvantaged students have always been given hope that they can live normal lives and grow into successful adults but there are little or no formal establishments to help them achieve this. They are in dire need of academic facilities to help further their education so that they can too have careers and reach their full potential as individuals despite their disability.
What is required of special needs universities and technicians are fully trained teachers, and small classes so as to provide an interpersonal one on one learning experience. Most people prefer small colleges to the usual vast campuses that are more common. Just like any other normal undergraduate or post graduate scholar, the special needs scholar may require residential facilities. The very few colleges out there for these students often do not offer these facilities.
It is a sad reality to have to face for the disadvantaged that they may never have the opportunity to be what they want to be merely due to a lack of proper academic institutions catering for their special needs. The lives of those with special needs are no less valuable than those without. They equally deserve the chance to pursue their dreams of higher education. Thus, colleges for learning disability students are a worldwide need. Where the funding exists, it is about time these establishments were put in place. In places where the funding is not available, funds need to be raised. Businesses and corporates must come to the party and sponsor a sufficient number of tertiary campuses for these helpless but deserving individuals.
