subject: St. Louis Cardinals Tickets : They Won Game 7 To Win The Series [print this page]

The 2011 season will go down as one of baseball's most compelling cinderella stories. On August 24, after the Cardinals played their 130th game of the season (only 32 remained), they were 10 games behind the Wild Card leading Atlanta Braves.

They went 23-9 to finish 90-72, a game better than Atlanta's 89-73, to win the Wild Card on the final regular season game marking the largest comeback in history after 130 games.[14][15][16] An impressive comeback as the Braves play in a different division, making it harder to gain games as head-to-head games are fewer.

The Cardinals played the Philadelphia Phillies in the NLDS. The Phillies were heavily favored to win. However, the Cardinals defeated them 3-2. Game 5 was notable for the pitching duel between Phillies ace Roy Halladay and Cardinals ace Chris Carpenter, both friends and former teammates. Halladay left after giving up just one earned run over eight innings. He was bested by Carpenter who threw a complete game 3 hit shutout, winning 1-0.

The first National League playoff series to end in a 1-0 score. In the NLCS, the Cardinals defeated the favored Milwaukee Brewers 4-2, to win their 18th National League pennant. This ranks them among the Dodgers and Giants for most in the National League (the Cardinals, Dodgers, and Giants together account for approximately half of all NL pennants won). They are second overall to the 40 by the Yankees.

The Cardinals defeated the heavily favored American League champion Texas Rangers 4-3 in the World Series. Game 3 was memorable for the three home runs hit by Albert Pujols in their 16-7 win. The home runs tied him with Reggie Jackson and Babe Ruth as the only players to hit three home runs in a World Series game.

In a 10-9 game 6 win, they became the first team to ever come back to win a World Series game after being down in both the ninth and in extra innings, as well as being the first to win being one strike away from elimination in two separate innings in the same game. They also became the first team to score runs in the eighth, ninth, tenth and eleventh innings of a World Series game.

They won game 7 to win the series. Hometown player, David Freese was named the Series' Most Valuable Player receiving a new Corvette, and keys to the city of St. Louis and St. Louis County.Freese set a new postseason record with 21 RBIs and became just the sixth player to win both the NLCS MVP and the World Series MVP.

In Game 6, while down to his final strike he extended the game to extra innings with a game tying 2 run triple before winning it with a walk off homerun in extra innings. Chris Carpenter, the winner of game 7, became the first pitcher ever to win two winner take all games in MLB postseason history.
