subject: Why You Need Air Conditioning Repair Now [print this page]

When the temps have cooled off, air conditioning repair may be the last thing on a homeowner's mind. Instead, Joe and Jane Householder may be thinking of chopping wood for the fireplace, insulating against the cold outside, baking pies and roasting turkeys. But, contrary to what they may be thinking, the off-season is the perfect time to get the AC up and running. Here are some reasons why:

- More time to comparison shop: When the triple digits are pounding at one's front door, it's easy to get desperate for cooling off. Joe and Jane may not look around for the best prices on repairs or installation. They may just call up the first HVAC company they see and book an appointment. Acting out of desperation is never a good way to make a smart decision. With plenty of time before the hot season arrives, it's much easier to compare prices and options to make a wise, well thought out choice.

- Tax credits: If the existing air conditioner is an old rattle trap, it may be time to purchase a new energy efficient unit. Not only will the Householder family's home be cooled off more quickly, their utility bills will be reduced since it will take less energy to do the job. Tax credits are given for Energy Star products and the days to get one's taxes done are looming on the horizon. Some repairs may be written off as well, especially if ACs are in rental properties and the purchaser is a landlord.

- No waiting in line for technicians: When a person's air conditioner breaks down in the summer, it'll be harder to get a tech to come out immediately. That's because everyone else has put in a service call to repair their broken down HVAC system. Waiting a few days for a tech to arrive due to backlogged appointment schedules is no fun when it's 110 degrees outside.

- Prices may be reduced: Because it's off season, there may be discounts and bargains to be had. It's all about supply-and-demand. If the HVAC company has air conditioning units available in the autumn or winter, they'll be putting lower price tags on them because there's more supply than demand. Come summer, the demand will rise and so will the price tags.

- You'll be happy next summer: When a "must do" task is done before it's actually needed, this is like making a deposit in a savings account. While it's not an urgent task right now, it will be in a few months. When the temperatures start climbing, you'll be patting yourself on the back for getting this task done ahead of time and the unit will be ready to roll.

While Joe and Jane Householder may not be thinking about air conditioning repair at the same time that they're wearing sweaters and jackets, they should be. Getting this task done during the off-season will allow more time for comparison shopping, an opportunity to get tax credits, less time waiting for techs to show up, reduced prices and happiness next summer.
