subject: Alvarado Man Survives Freak Construction Accident [print this page] Accidents can happen anywhere, but when you work on a construction site with powerful tools and heavy materials, you learn to become very aware of your surroundings. One wrong step or slip up can cost you a limb, or sometimes your life. Luckily for Shaun Hunter, this wasnt the case, when he hit the safety on an air-powered staple gun and a two and a half inch staple fired through his skull.
If it sounds like a large stroke of luck to you, youre absolutely right. The two and a half inch staple could have killed him or left him permanently brain damaged, but surprisingly this 27-year old Alvarado man who could have died on November 4th, had every intention of returning to work just a week or two later.
So how did this young man come out unscathed after a two and a half inch staple lodged in his brain? According to Dr. Fernando Silva, the staple somehow missed every major blood vessel in the mans brain, even though it did lodge deep into both halves. Hunter was rushed to the emergency room as soon as the accident occurred and he was completely alert and conscious for the entire experience. He even filled out his own paperwork!
Doctors wanted to remove the staple as quickly as possible and after finding that the gray matter of his brain was fully intact, they decided to operate. Their first attempt was to use pliers, but the staple was too deep. They had to open the scalp, make a cut around the skull and gently remove the staple and bone together. A portion of his skull was then reattached after surgery and a brain scan showed full brain function for Hunter.
When Hunter was asked about the experience, he said, It didnt hurt. It did it so quick. A shockwave is what I felt and everybody started panicking. Hunter had lifted his head up quickly, hitting the staple-gun and setting it off.
His construction company declined to comment but Hunter said he blames himself, not his co-worker, for the accident. He said he wasnt paying attention. Hopefully his company, Champion Homes, will be taking some major precautions, like intensive safety training and mandatory safety guidelines, to ensure that everyone on-site is aware of their surroundings and safe at all times.
