subject: Fragrance Facts [print this page] Primarily perfumes are classified into six main categories which may be listed as: Floral, Fruity, citrus, wood, chypre, and last but not least Oriental fragrance family. All Branded perfumes may not have this directly written which family their perfume belongs to on their branded boxes, but the hint will be there in their advertising and labeling. Each Fragrance family may also include a hint other fragrances found within the main class of fragrance.
The floral fragrances include those with a fruity, oriental, water, green, aldehyde, citrus or floral aroma.
The citrus fragrances include those with a lemon, mandarin or orange aroma.
The Oriental fragrances include those with a floral, fruit, wood, spicy, and ambergris aroma.
The wood fragrances include those with a floral, fruit, or patchouli aroma.
The Chypre fragrances include those with a floral, wood and oriental aroma.
And lastly the Fruit fragrance family consists of those that are purely fruity in aroma, for example vanilla or mango perfumes.
All the branded perfume in the world fall under one of the above families and aroma groups and there are no patented fragrances in the world contrary to belief as perfumes and their Fragrances predate the Roman empire and can be traced as far and beyond the construction of the Pyramids and even predate written literature!
Did you know that most people do not know from which fragrance family they are purchasing their perfume from? And apart from acquiring a sense of taste according to their environment that they have grown up in, taken on other taste from recommendations from other persons, they just simply eventually stick to what they are familiar with? This is out of both habit and comfort zones created to identify ourselves in society.
