subject: Bicycle Helmets Not Just Another Biking Accessory [print this page]

What do you think are the reasons because of which someone should wear a bicycle helmet? It is a very easy (and ignorant) thing to say that helmets are unnecessary and they cannot prevent accidents. It is true that helmets cannot put a check on accidents, but it is also a fact that helmets can save your life in case you met with an accident.

According to medical statistics of several countries, it has been proved that more than 50% of people admitted in hospital due to bike accidents have suffered head injuries. These are those people that advocate wearing bicycle helmet as an unimportant thing. If they had been wearing a helmet, there are chances that they may not have suffered serious head injuries.

A single injury in head can leave its ever lasting effect on the victims brain. In worst cases, the patient might even become handicapped for life. In fact at some of the construction sites, wearing helmet is a mandatory rule. In such sites, it should be the duty of the employer to supply right helmets to his employees to prevent head injuries.

You can find a large variety of bicycle helmets, each meant for a different purpose. Whichever helmet you choose for yourself, the key is to wear a helmet with right fitting. A loose helmet can slip out of your head in case of accidents and can leave your head vulnerable to injuries. A right fitting helmet should contact your head from top and in every direction. It must be steady on your head. A helmet that moves in case of jerks is loose and should be replaced immediately.

While buying helmets for kids many parents consider buying a bigger helmet that can accommodate them for longer period of time. However, this is wrong. Although it may last longer, but by buying a loose helmet for your child you are compromising on his/her safety.

Comfort is another important factor that you should keep in mind while buying bicycle helmets. If a helmet is not comfortable for you, you will try to avoid wearing it. Therefore, you should not mind paying some extra bucks to buy a helmet that fits you well and is comfortable.

In addition to when you are riding bicycle, plenty of accidents also occur when you are riding horses, skiing, or snowboarding. So, if you or your kids are taking part in any such sport, it is better to make sure that he wears a helmet for protection of his/her head.

Whether or not you wear a bicycle helmet is completely your own choice. However, never underestimate the usefulness of a helmet. It is always best to stay protected than suffering consequences. So, always wear a helmet and stay safe!
