subject: What Do You Know About The Naproxen Side Effects? [print this page]

Naproxen is one of the drugs which belong to NSAID that is non-steroidal anti-inflammatory medication. These meds are usually used for treating inflammation like in cases of arthritis, tendonitis, bursitis and many other inflammatory conditions. These meds are also used as pain reliever and antipyretic, and particularly to treat dysmenorrheal. Although naproxen is used for treatment of various diseases, yet the naproxen side effects cannot be ignored.

The severe naproxen side effects which are also less common are basically divided into two categories: cardiovascular risks and gastrointestinal risks. The cardiovascular risks increase vulnerability to myocardial infarction, stroke and other such conditions which increase with continued intake of naproxen. This medicine is prohibited for patients who have post coronary bypass pain control. Gastrointestinal troubles are more often and common when compared to cardiovascular risks. These risks include peptic ulcers and sometimes gastrointestinal bleeding, which may prove fatal if immediate measures are not taken. Though the GI risks are more common in older people and those who have used it for a long time, they can occur at any time, in patient belonging to any age group.

The common naproxen side effects are those which are shared by most of the NSAIDs. These side effects are like gastritis, acid dyspepsia, peptic ulcer disease and some other symptoms such as nausea, abdominal pain, constipation and asymptomatic increase in the enzyme. There can be some allergic reactions such as rash or photosensitivity. Headaches, tiredness, giddiness and ringing in the ears are also some other naproxen side effects.

You can buy naproxen at pharmacies without prescription yet you should be cautious while using this medicine as there are many side effects related to its usage. It may lead to the whole spectrum of acid dyspeptic disease, and gastric and duodenal ulcers with blood loss or perforation. Taking this medicine regularly and that too for long time can lead to renal toxicity which can even result in kidney failure, giving rise to need of dialysis or even kidney transplant. As compared to other NSAIDs, sodium retention is more in case of naproxen (which can further lead to high blood pressure) and exacerbations of congestive heart breakdown and edema. Sometimes, skin reactions such as Stevens Johnson syndrome and toxic epidermal necrolysis can also happen.

Naproxen should not be taken with other NSAID medications and the COX2 inhibitors such as Celebrex and aspirin. The efficiency of the ARB medications, the ACE inhibitors, and many blood pressure medications can be decreased by naproxen. You must go by the prescribed guidelines given by the manufacturer so that you are aware of potential drug interactions.

The mothers are asked to stay away from this dug during the breast feeding period of baby or child. Since alcohol increases the vulnerability to GI bleeding from naproxen, excessive alcohol should be avoided while taking naproxen as medication. Also people who are allergic to aspirin and other NSAIDs should not take naproxen as that allergy is related to the naproxen allergy.
