subject: Accept Yourself [print this page] Every day, we walk through life, accomplishing tasks, helping ourselves and others, and even making mistakes. But, how well do we walk? Are we unsure of ourselves, creeping along, so afraid to stumble that we move slowly or dont move at all? As the CEO of your business- and your life- you cant afford to stand still as life and its opportunities pass you by. You must learn to be sure of yourself, hold your head high and accept yourself and your abilities as assets this world needs.
So many times, people have been unsatisfied with their own abilities that they desire to be someone else. You see a successful business person or a movie star and say to yourself: I wish I was them because they have it so good. You have your own set of attributes that make you an awesome person. While it is good to dream, and this characteristic is what makes us human, we cannot let ourselves be consumed with the desire to be someone else. When we do that we-
Hinder ourselves
Envy, shame, anger, anxiety, and jealousy are all signs of a lacking self-confidence. Picture a small child: though he may have a great toy of his own, he wants another toy just because someone else is playing with it and is content with himself. These emotions lead us to desire what others have, and thus, ignore our own abilities and gifts. We then become less accepting of ourselves, which stops us from being who we truly are.
When we feel these emotions of self-doubt, we can no longer be truly efficient in our life. We linger on thoughts of remorse and regret, halting our ability to move forward towards success. We may focus on how someone else has achieved their goals, and forget that we must achieve our own. When we have lived on this path for so long, self-doubt becomes second nature and will eventually slow you to a grinding halt. Instead of allowing self-doubt to become your second nature-
Learn to appreciate yourself
Knowing that you are just as important as anyone else in this world is the first step. While we cannot help others without helping ourselves, we must understand that we are sometimes there to boost others along- because we are so awesome.
Work on developing self-acceptance- Realizing that not one person is absolute perfection is the first step. We all will inevitably make mistakes. What we do with this knowledge helps or hurts us. Accepting the fact that mistakes do happen, will help you gain self-acceptance. Dont ever label yourself a failure. Sticks and stones will break your bones, but words do hurt- especially when they come from your own mouth (or mind).
Consider that the power of positive reinforcement and self-talk do indeed help. While youre driving, exercising, or anytime during the day, talk to yourself. Tell yourself that you are doing a good job; that you can do anything you put your mind to; and that despite speed bumps in the road that slow you down for only a moment, actually offer another chance to accelerate again.
Whether you think you can, or think you cantyoure right.- Henry Ford
Live and learn- Remember that mistakes are to be learned from, so accept them and use them to strengthen your abilities rather than trying to avoid acknowledging them. Judge your behavior, dont get mad or frustrated with yourself. In the future, make an effort to change your ways so that the next time you will be successful.
If we keep looking back, we wont be able to see what the future holds for us. Dont let your mistakes become failure. Failure is the word that stops us dead in our tracks. Mistakes are made, it is a fact of life, but by accepting them and learning from them, we learn to accept ourselves.
