subject: Before Stepping Out To Buy Hoist, Familiarize Yourself With Available Variants [print this page]

One equipment that can be seen at almost every construction and mining site is hoist. Hoist is basically a device used for loading or lifting heavy equipments from one place to another and most of the lifting operations are carried using this device itself. Whenever such devices are used at construction sites, a risk factor is involved always and it is essential for builders and other professionals in similar industries to buy the right type of hoist from hoist manufacturer to avoid any accidents at the site.

Hoist, which is one amongst the widely-used material handling equipments, is generally categorized on the basis of two factors: lifting medium and power type used. Here below are mentioned the sub-types of hoist that one should be aware of before purchasing this lifting equipment.

On Basis of Lifting Medium

The kind of lifting medium used in hoist is the one factor on which this material handling equipment varies. The three types of hoist with different lifting medium are:

1.Wire Rope Today, every industry is technology driven and the same trend is followed in the construction industry too. The wire rope hoist is automatic in nature and all the lifting operations can be accomplished in no time. Under this category of automatic hoists, users are generally presented with two options chain type and wire rope type. Wire rope hoists are available in different sizes at hoist manufacturer as well and one should take into count all these factors whenever buying this mechanical equipment.

2.Wrapped Around a Drum Portable hoists which are not very large in size include wrapped around a drum as the lifting medium. Again, this type of hoist is available in two variants of chain hoist and wire rope. Where the former is used exclusively for vertical lifting, the later one finds application in operations such as lifting, pulling and binding.

On Basis of Power Source

Another criterion using which hoists are divided into different categories is the source of power. Some of the most commonly used power sources for hoists include electricity, hydraulics and air driven motors. The decision regarding which source of power should be used depends on factors like nature of operation, type of industry, weight of the material to be lifted, time duration, budget, location and a few more.

Once the buyer is familiar with the types of hoists available in the market, the task of buying the machine would be accurate and easier too.
