subject: It Is Reasonable To Skip Classes [print this page] As we all know, skipping classes violates school rules. Whats more, a poor attendance record will damage our final mark. But some college students still try every means to escape classes. And the number of them may be much bigger than we can imagine. Thus, a why springs out from our minds.
Before the because comes into being, a recent fact attracts our eyes first. Three students from Anhui Normal University established ltaoke website in June. Much to our surprise, the website quickly attracted 2,000 registered members in three months. On that website, students can share their experiences of skipping classes and even post ads to look for someone to replace them to attend courses. We may think that its embarrassing for universities to see this shameful behavior discussed. However, Xiao Haitao, a professor from the Institute of Higher Education at Shenzhen University, said that its good for schools and teachers to know the reasons why students skip classes via the website. He pointed out that some students skip classes because of laziness, and others play truant because the teaching is really dissatisfactory. Universities can seek improvements to solve the class-skipping problem, said Xiao.
Well, above are the reasons giving by some bystanders. What are the parties, say, students excuses?
Chen Yang, a senior English major at Yangtze University, thinks that he is forced to skip some courses because of the poor teaching. He also said that hes wasting time in the classroom when the teacher read the textbook word by word or just hands him some outdated reading materials. These teachers dont put enough effort into preparing their classes. I wont respect the class if they dont respect my time, said Chen. According to what he said, we can guess that he would rather skip classes to study in the library, watch online videos, or attend other courses that he is interested in. But Chen draws a clear line between himself and those who skip classes in order to sleep or hang around. He emphasized: I skip classes with a clear goal, which is to study the areas Im into and broaden my horizon.
As for me, skipping classes is not absolutely unforgivable, and it could be reasonable instead. Off course, here I agree with Xiao and Chen doesnt mean that we should give permission for students to skip classes, but show our understanding of absences in a limited cases. Among the reasonable excuses, a certain course is boring and useless may be used by most hooky. So in my view, one way to reduce this reasonable skipping is that the schools offer teachers more training, as well as give students different optional courses and ensure that they can attend the courses they are interested in.
