subject: Opt For Snow Socks If Heavy Snow Isnt An Issue [print this page]

In recent years the amount of snowfall that the UK experiences during winter has risen, causing an increase in road traffic accidents and general difficulty for drivers. There are many reasons why driving in the wintertime can be tricky, including slippery roads, black ice and fog. Many people have fitted snow tyres or even snow chains in the past, but if you dont live in an area of the country that experiences incredibly heavy snowfall you could see yourself spending money on car parts and accessories that you dont actually need.

Snow socks are ideally suited to intermittent snowfall, when the roads arent coated in a thick layer of snow but you still need extra grip to help you when driving. They can also come in handy during sudden snowfall, since it is not advised to drive on normal road surfaces with snow chains. Snow socks can be used throughout the winter season and wont do any damage to your tyres or the road surface when it isnt snowy, although you should take them off on uncovered roads as they could wear out. They are generally priced very reasonably.

As with snow chains, you will only need two snow socks for your vehicle. The socks are made from a lightweight yet durable material that can add extra grip to your tyres when driving, and they usually come in packs of two. You will need to fit them over the drive wheels of your car and they will help to stop them from slipping on the road surface as you drive.

Snow socks come in generic sizes, unlike snow chains, so you wont need to buy a special set of them that will fit your car and your car only. They are often sized by small, medium and large, and all you need to do is check your tyre wall and note the measurements listed there. This will tell you the width, profile measurement and rim size of your tyres, and you can then use this information online to find out which snow socks you need.

You can also get snow socks from a number of stockists around the country, and some of them can even help you to fit them once you have made your purchase. This is especially helpful if you dont feel too confident about doing it yourself.

When using your snow socks you should remember not to go over a certain speed limit, usually 40km/h, as they are not designed for high speeds. Also, you should never brake suddenly in icy conditions, even when using snow socks.
