subject: How To Make A Build It Yourself Wind Mill [print this page]

You have probably been thinking about it for a while now and haven't pulled the trigger. If you have ever thought about building your own diy wind turbine from a kit, Now is always the best time to check out the next step and check out some doable options.

The reasons for making your own home power are obvious and here are the top 3:

1. Cut or eliminate your electricity costs

Taking advantage of the FREE wind that blows by everyday will cut your electricity bill. The only question is, by how much. It is very reasonable to expect to cut it by a third with most systems designed for the home, if your home is under 2,000 square feet.

2. Energy independence is achievable

Fossil fuels are going away. They are a finite resource that we are using more and more of, so it is inevitable - it is only a matter of when.

Having a supply of power independent of your local utility will give you a terrific hedge against rising prices Now and it will give you independence from rapidly fading supplies.

3. Doing your part to help Green the planet

By replacing the energy you purchase every month to power your home, you are helping chip away at the destruction of the planet caused by greenhouse gases. The largest greenhouse gas is carbon dioxide which is the primary byproduct of burning fossil fuels traditionally used to make most of the electricity in America.

The exciting thing about a diy wind turbine is, you don't really have to spend all the money you have got to get up and running.

If you are serious about checking things out further, there are basically 2 ways to do it:

1. Buy a guide or a set of plans

The plans are available from a number of places online. They will show you exactly how and the type of place to get the materials and then, how to cut the blades to size and install.

This is a great way to get your wind generator up and running if you have done (and enjoy) home do it yourself projects before. It is Not a good way to go if you are impatient like I am.

Thankfully, for the faint of heart, there are other options.

If building things from scratch IS your thing, a diy wind turbine from plans can be enormously rewarding. Seeing the fruit of your labor lower your power bill is tremendously rewarding.

2. Buy a diy home wind turbine kit

Obviously, this way of doing things is much much easier to get your system up and running and producing power. Do it yourself home wind turbine kits can cost between $6,000 and $10,000 for the initial purchase of the kit, depending on how much power you need/want to produce. Figure that much again for the cost of the install and you will be approximately correct on out of pocket cost for the completed system.

No offense, but the windmill from a kit you only have to assemble will probably be better looking than one you make from scratch.

Either way you go, you can probably make between 1000 -1500 watts each month with your home wind generator. Like we were saying before, that will power about a third to possibly even one half of your home, unless you happen to be Donald Trump.

As an aside; the wisest thing you can do is leave the actual work of attaching the completed wind turbine to your house regardless of how you choose to build your system - from scratch or from a kit. Also, tying the system in to your home's electrical system should be done by a pro.

However, don't let your lack of familiarity with the final part of the installation to mar your sense of accomplishment! Either way you go, a diy wind turbine is a massive amount of effort. The payoff though, is in Free energy every year for as long as you maintain the wind system.
