This exhibit demonstrates the stages of the ancient Egyptian art of mummification. No other culture has captured our imaginations as Ancient Egyptian Mummies have. Mummification has been a mysterious art. It was important because the ancient Egyptians believed in an afterlife where the spirit, the "ka," would return to the original body. The process of mummification took many years to perfect, probably a thousand years.
This same exhibit also covers the achievements of the ancient Egyptians in medicine.
Cleopatra's Exhibit
The Pharaonic Village, in its efforts to encompass the entire history of Egypt, opened this exhibit which contains the history of Alexander the Great and the Ptolemies, as well as models of Alexandria, the Library, Pharos (the lighthouse), the Battle of Actium and finally all about Cleopatra who was one of the world's most famous queens.
The history of Coptic Christianity is depicted in this exhibit. There are also models of the monasteries of St. Anthony and St. Catherine, as well as old Cairo with all its churches. Another model shows the Catechetical School of Alexandria - and still another depicts the trip of the Holy family in Egypt. Coptic art is also displayed. The exhibit is well worth visiting.
