Lanzarote is located in the Spanish owned Canary Islands chain and is an especially popular holiday destination. Thanks to the fact that it has a whole host of stunning panoramas to view, an extensive network of glorious beaches and in addition a climate that is the envy of many other European holiday destinations.

This also helps to make Lanzarote an attractive spot for athletes and sports tourists, many of whom flock to the island in order to compete in the annual Iron Man competition, which is widely regarded as one of the toughest events of its kind in the world.

The Iron Man sporting event gets underway on Lanzarote annually in late May and attracts roughly 1000 challengers. Many of these manage to finish the course which includes a 3km swim, 180 km grueling bike ride and a full marathon in only 12 hours or so, with the front runners managing to clock in, around 8 hours plus. This event is so well-known that numerous holiday-makers plan their annual vacations and will book accommodation in Lanzarote to coincide with the event, which is usually held in late May.

Competition conditions are so challenging that only the foolhardy would consider entering without some form of acclimatization, and most prefer the flexibility that you won't get in a hotel so a majority tend to stay in private villas in Puerto del Carmen or Playa Blanca both before and after the event.

There is plenty to do and discover on Lanzarote island but if you are staying in any of the good quality Lanzarote villas with pools that are available for rent and fancy getting away from the swimming pool you'll definitely want to embark on a day trip to one of the neighbouring islands. As both La Graciosa as well as Fuerteventura can be reached in less than half an hour and the sea crossing to either of the islands most days is pretty calm, especially in the summertime.

If you fancy doing more than just sunbathing then Lanzarote offers loads of things to do. You could explore the islands many natural attractions - such as the majestic Timanfaya Volcano Park and the breathtaking Valley of 1000 Palms. Discover the unique creations of the local artist Csar Manrique, such as the Jameos del Agua and the Mirador del Rio. Or wander through picture postcard towns and villages such as Haria and Yaiza.

Eating out in Lanzarote can be a delightful experience as the delicacies of Lanzarote fuse together the traditional recipes of Spain, with exotic African spices. Authentic rustic cuisine can be found in the inland towns and villages, whilst you can find fantastic seafood restaurants are in abundance in the resorts and villages along the coast. Whilst your here it's also worth tasting the traditional goats cheese in addition to a jug of invigorating Lanzarotean Sangria, it's supposedly quite a bit more potent when compared with the Spanish alternative.
