subject: Christianity In Christmas Films [print this page]

While there are movies that show the famous fictional icons of Christmas such as elves and snowmen, there are also films that show the true reason behind the celebration of Christmas, which is the birth of Jesus Christ.

The nativity story has been popular because it depicts the birth of the Savior that led to us celebrating this meaningful holiday. Some people enjoy the Christmas season watching movies that make them laugh but others would want to reminisce and meditate on Christmas as part of our celebration of Jesus birth. There are plenty of movies narrating different scenarios on the birth of Jesus Christ from the traditional nativity to the modern day everyday life where people rediscover the origin of Christmas.

The Christmas Box tells the story of a loving family who met an old lady in an elegant Victorian home. The family applied to be caretakers of the mansion during Christmas in order to earn income while the father takes care of his business. The owner of the mansion is a cold and distant old woman who has no sense of fun. As time pass, the wife and the daughter became close to the old woman while the father became obsessed with working on his business. Later, he found a box with letters inside giving him a glimpse of the old womans life. The father also had mysterious dreams that plagued his sleep convincing him that there is a story behind the mansion and its inhabitants. The story teaches the couple about the real meaning and reason behind Christmas through the old woman.

The Best Christmas Pageant Ever is about juvenile delinquent and troublemaker siblings who causes the town uproar through their mean antics. Their father deserted them early in their life while their mother works hard and is rarely at home. As troublemakers, the town does not like them and the six siblings would cause more trouble because of this. One day, one of the siblings heard from a boy who was in the same age as him that people receive food when they go to church. For the first time in their life, the siblings went to church and they were cast in the Christmas pageant because their mother was made in charge after the one officiating it met an accident. The town did not agree with it and after many disasters throughout the play, the lives of the siblings changed as they get to know the story they are playing. One of them even cried carrying the baby Jesus as she reflected on their life as a family.

These two films does not show the birth of Jesus Christ as a historical account but rather the meaning of His birth and how it can change a person. The real meaning of Christmas is about the birth of Jesus Christ and what it brought everyone. Movies such as The Christmas Box and The Best Christmas Pageant Ever show the important message that Christmas celebrations should always carry.
