subject: Unofficial World Record [print this page] The Volkswagen up! concept car made its debut at the 2007 IAA Frankfurt Motor Show in Germany. The Volkswagen up! concept car, which was designed by Volkswagen Group Chief Designer Walter de'Silva and Head Designer of the Volkswagen Passenger Cars marque Klaus Bischoff is expected to go in to production on 3 December 2011 in Germany, and elsewhere, in 2012.
The original Volkswagen up! concept car was designed using a rear-engine, rear-wheel drive layout but the 2011 production up! model will have a front-engine, front-wheel drive layout, using the Volkswagen Group MQB platform and a 3-cylinder 1.0 litre petrol engine.
Recently 16 employees at Volkswagen Communications attempted an unofficial world record to seat 15 women and one man into the Volkswagen up!. Employees from Volkswagen dealers in Birmingham and many others from across the UK came to watch the attempt.
The Volkswagen up! measures 3.54 metres long and 1.64 metres wide, which is one of the smallest four-seat cars, but it still managed to fit all 16 employees. There were two in the boot, one on the dashboard, seven on the rear bench, four on the front seats, two in the footwells, and then the boot lid and doors were shut, and the windows were also closed.
There has been couple more attempts but in a Volkswagen Beetle, the first was at a Volkswagen meet in Australia, where 17 people managed to fit inside a Volkswagen Beetle. Then in 2010, 27 students in the USA managed to fit themselves into a new Volkswagen Beetle.
With the new Volkswagen up! Being released it is bound to see a lot of reviews becoming available soon. This car is entering the market with high hopes from Volkswagen. They look at the new car taking the market by storm and fitting in nicely with their new ranges at the moment. Obviously the world famous and incredibly popular Volkswagen Golf and Volkswagen Polo may not be rivalled at a massive standard but the up! does offer something slightly different to these models. With the hopes of test drives being available for this new model people will be able to put it through it paces and see whether it will be something that suits their lifestyle.
