subject: More Details About Pop Music [print this page]

What is 'pop music?' Where did this distinction arise and what's its purpose? Whether it

has a purpose, who does it serve?

Pop music is actually an abbreviation for popular music. Often associated with

commercial music, it's a genre of music, which is extremely near to the music prevalent

throughout the rock culture. However, usually the music is technically softer than hardcore

rock 'n roll music. According to to The Oxford Dictionary of Music, the word was coined to

denote the music which had been full of appeal and could influence the youth of these

times. This particular genre had a commercial viability and was not a part of any kind of

expression of the youth or rebellion of sorts.

To begin with, we all know what it means, e-commerce of 'pop music' and 'serious music.'

It depends a lot on what side from the fence you're looking at, of course. If you're a

'serious musician,' 'serious music' is 'good,' and 'pop' music is 'bad.' Obviously everyone

knows that 'serious music' will make you no money. Why? Since it is 'good,' of course, and

the majority of people don't know about 'good.' They merely purchase music that's 'bad.'

Now to become fair, if you're, on the other hand, of the particular fence, 'serious

music' is 'boring,' (that's bad) and pop music is 'cool.' (That's 'good'). Moreover, this

historically speaking, has were rather 'radical' and 'revolutionary.'

First of all, we all know what it really means, e-commerce of 'pop music' and 'serious

music.' It depends upon a great deal on which side of the fence you're looking at, of

course. If you're a 'serious musician,' 'serious music' is 'good,' and 'pop' music is

'bad.' Obviously everyone knows that 'serious music' will make you no money. Why? Since it

is 'good,' obviously, and the majority of individuals have heard of 'good.' They only pay

for music that's 'bad.'

Now to be fair, if you are on the other side of the particular fence, 'serious music' is

'boring,' (that's bad) and pop music is 'cool.' (That's 'good'). Moreover, this

historically speaking, has tended to be 'radical' and 'revolutionary.'

And what of this hoary chestnut saying pop music is really a lesser discipline? A person

with a musical ear let you know that there are been plenty of great 'pop music.' Why is

this so? Many of these artists, like Elton John, visited music school. They're 'serious

musicians.' So why this great deceit? The obvious suspect may be the music business, but it

is obvious right now. They have no idea what they're doing either.

No, the deeper the truth is that, so long as there's been a culture in the western

hemisphere, there's been a counter culture. All this business of counter culture, that

supposedly began in the sixties, didn't.
