subject: Popular Charity Walks In The Uk [print this page] It has become increasingly popular to undertake physical challenges in aid of a chosen charity. Tens of thousands of people dedicate themselves to training for and running a marathon, sometimes even dressing up in the most uncomfortable clothing. Or there is the more adventurous choice of sky diving or parachute jumps. Long walks are also a popular option and many wonderful landscapes in the UK play host to such altruistic endeavours.
Walking for a charitable cause usually involves some training and physical endurance challenge. You will also have to research the route well and equip yourself in the right outdoor clothing and walking boots. It may be the length of the walk that is most challenging. Or it may be a difficult route, with steep or rugged inclines and descents. The challenge is therefore worth people supporting and investing in and you can enjoy the double sense of achievement both the personal achievement of completing the walk and the satisfaction of knowing that others will benefit from your exertion.
Perhaps most famous is the Land's End to John O' Groats walk. This basically takes in the length of Britain, from the south west tip of the main island in Cornwall at Land's End to the village of John O' Groats the northern most point up in the Highlands of Scotland. This will be something over 1000 miles and you can take whatever route you like. And of course all that distance will take a lot of time one walker completed the trek in 80 days. This walk is an extreme challenge for the body and mind and not for the faint hearted. But it can raise a lot of money for charities such as cancer, children's and homeless organisations. And the memories from experiencing such a thrilling adventure will stay with you for life.
Perhaps not quite so extreme is the Hadrian's Wall walk. This walk also crosses the country of England along the borders with Scotland but you are transversing the country this time, covering its width not its length. And the distance is somewhat more manageable at 72 miles as you will hike through the stunning Northumberland National Park. This walk can be completed in a few days or a weekend.
Another favourite is the National Three Peaks challenge which involves ascending landmark summits in England, Wales and Scotland. And these highest peaks of the respective countries have to be completed in 24 hours. No mean feat indeed and thus an excellent way to raise money for charitable causes that you may feel passionate about.
There are many more thrilling walks you can take part in in the UK, either in an organised group or alone. The training and preparation can be an excellent way of getting fit and helping others. Of course you will need to equip yourself in only the best quality outdoor clothing and you will have to take the time to wear in your walking boots before you can undertake these walking challenges.
