subject: Finding A Great Hotel Deal So You Can Afford A Vacation [print this page]

In today's tight economy, vacations may seem like a luxury. However, by finding a great deal on hotels, you will cut your expenses and enable yourself to enjoy a worry-free break from daily life. Many great deals may be found online, but sometimes the best deals are negotiated by simply calling the hotel and talking to the desk clerk.

Many travelers are now booking their vacations online, and travel websites offer many enticing deals. For instance, websites that book flights and rental cars may also offer package deals that include a cheap hotel stay. Sometimes, the cheapest deals are found by booking directly through the hotel website. Just be sure to read the terms and conditions carefully. Some websites will not allow you to cancel your reservations or change the date if you have an unexpected change of plans.

Sometimes, staying off the beaten path will save you a great deal of money. Looking online and in travel guides to find a local inn will give you a connection with the local community at a lower price than many leading chain hotels. If you're taking a vacation in the city, then consider staying in a hotel in the suburbs, especially if the city has public transportation. Staying on the outskirts and taking the train into midtown will allow you to take advantage of lower hotel rates.

Going during the off season will guarantee some great savings. For example, booking that Vermont inn in the spring as opposed to during fall foliage season or winter skiing season will knock a lot of money off of the cost. In addition, hotels will be less crowded, allowing you to enjoy amenities like the pool and the exercise room without being pressed in by other guests.

Many hotels offer discounts for AAA or AARP membership. Educators or military personnel may also be eligible for special rates. Mention your affiliation when you book the room and ask if you're eligible for a discount.

If you're comfortable doing so, negotiate. Try telling the desk clerk that the cost is a little over your budget, and ask if the clerk will knock 10 percent off of the rate. Negotiating will often work best when hotels aren't crowded because they will have an incentive to book rooms at a lower rate. If the clerk seems receptive, you may score a great deal. If the clerk seems angry or offended, go somewhere else.
