Every marriage has its ups and downs, and it is imporatant for the involved individuals to take measures to overcome these hurdles. However, there are ceratin unpleasant events or issues which may put the realtionship in jeopardy. Couples try hard to overcome the differences and to workout their marriage. Even after repeated efforts if the couple is unable to resolve their disputes they can either go for seperation or divorce.

In a legal seperation, the couple lives apart and the court outlines the rights and duties of the couple. Seperation does not mean the end of a marriage, rather it is out of choice that the couple lives seperately. There are certain issues which can be resolved during the seperation period, such as child custody, support, division of property as well as spoual maintenance. Seperation gives couples the time to resolve their differences and to think over whether they actually want divorce or not. Even after seeration if the couples feel that they cannot live together then they can file for a divorce.

Divorce means the annulment or dissolution of marriage, which is painful for every individual involved, be it the couple or the children. There are many issues which may lead to the breakdown of marriage such as abandonment, abuse (sexual, physical or substance) and lack of commitment as well as communication. Earlier marriage used to signify monogamy, however things have changed over the years and a growing concern in the society is infedilty and polygamy; which has destroyed a number of marriages.
