According to many experts, the precursors to modern comics were the satirical works of artists like Rudolph Tpffer, Wilhelm Bush, Christophe, or Angelo Agostini. In 1827, Switzerland's Rudolph Topffer created a comic strip and continued to publish seven graphic novels. In 1837, "The Adventures of Obadiah Oldbuck" was published by Rudolph Tpffer which was considered to be the earliest known comic book.

Comic books are basically magazines made up of comics, narrative artwork in the form of separate panels that represent individual scenes, often accompanied by dialogue as well as including brief descriptive prose. The term comic book arose because the first comic book reprinted the humor comic strips. The comic book contains everyday language and idiom, as well as color and a sophisticated interplay between text and imageall serving a therapeutic, explanatory, and commercial purpose.

From the time of its inception, comic books have attracted the attention of people irrespective of their age. Starting from kids to the teens and to the old, everyone loves reading them. Even in our school days, we used to carry our comics with us and hide them inside our reading books so that we could read them if a class got too boring. Comic books are a part of literature and often reflect the society and its culture. Comics and graphic novels address a range of societal issues and allow us to showcase what is happening in the world today.

Some comic books act only as plot devices, some as social commentary, and others try to make us think. Comic books positively influence a childs psychological development due to their ability to communicate important social issues, stimulate creativity, and depict a truthful sense of reality. Many times, the storylines in comic books mirror the occurrences of a characters everyday life, emphasizing them through spectacular events.

Moreover, reading comic books also develop a tendency to read books in general. As comic books are easy to understand and attract our visual impulses because of the pictures inscribed in it, children started reading these books from a very early age. But unfortunately in todays world of advanced technology, comic book reading culture is replaced by video games and cartoon films. Now hardly a child is found to read these books. Now we need to restore this almost extinct culture that has many benefits to offer. The best way to preserve this culture is to read these comics out to children at free time. The schools are also adopting the method of socially enlightening children through the use of comic books.
