subject: The Issues Besetting Nri Marriages [print this page] As NRIs continue to populate the world, many of its customs and traditions are retained despite the change of address. One of these cornerstones is marriage and family. Essentially, NRI marriages are understood to be between an Indian woman from India and an Indian man in another country.
There are many other issues involving this kind of arrangement. The families ignore common precautions that is used in Indian matchmaking marriages. This is further complicated by the fact that the Indian woman is isolated in another country facing a multitude of problems such as communication, lack of information as well as lack of relatives and support group should the marriage go sour. The following are the issues besetting NRI marriages.
a)The Indian woman married to the NRI is abandoned before being taken by the husband in the new country of residence. This leaves the Indian woman alone and isolated in a foreign country without the wherewithal to even keep her head above water;
b)The Indian woman is violated, assaulted, abused, ill-treated and forcibly returned to India. This would result not only in shame but also financial as well as criminal issues that would befall the woman;
c)The quick engagement followed by a lavish wedding and a dowry and honeymoon would haunt the young family. Then as the husband awaits the visa for the Indian bride, the visa application is rejected resulting in financial issues;
d)The many shortcuts during the matchmaking fails to resolve security issues. These include the NRI having a previous marriage or the whole marriage was a set up to lead the woman to a life of slavery or servitude;
e)The NRI misrepresented themselves in the matchmaking. Thus when the truth comes out, the Indian woman is subjected to the hardship resulting from such misrepresentation;
f)If the marriage sours, the divorce laws of the country where the Indian woman resides would be more lenient. Once finalized and losing her visa privileges, which were the basis of the visa issuance, results in the Indian woman being deported leaving the country and even children in the country of residence;
As can be seen, there are many issues that affect NRI marriages. These issues though can easily be avoided or remedied but with the rush of Indian women seeking a supposed better life with NRI marriages. While some NRI marriages succeed, some though end up in divorce and even violence. Avoiding these can only help make this tradition alive and well in the NRI communities overseas.
