subject: Fosamax And The Things We Need To Know [print this page]

The potentially dangerous, long-term side effects of the biphosphonate Fosamax have been published in many studies. The drug is supposed to help treat osteoporosis but things seem to turn out differently. These studies have also shown that women who are 68 or older and who have taken Fosamax for over five years have about a three-percent chance of suffering from a femoral shaft fracture than those who used the drugs for fewer than 100 days. On the other hand, studies show that Fosamax risks are not seen on other biphosphonate drugs , which is quite interesting.

International distributor Merck & Co. considered Fosamax as its popular pharmaceutical product. As seen from sales data, Fosamax has had a steady prescription rate of around 1.5 million per year since its introduction to the public. These prescriptions have led to sales in billions in US dollars.

Merck was accused by many patients of failing to provide enough warning labels on their product. The potential side effects of the drug were not publicly known, according to media reports. As regard bone death and several other allegations, there have been at least 100 different cases filed against Merck. These cases were filed since 2006 in a multidistrict litigation venue in the U.S. District Court for the District of New Jersey. In fact, one bellwether trial has already been finished. Femur fracture complaints, however, have been purposely separated from the jaw bone death claims since the types of injuries being claimed are similar but at the same time non-related to each other.

The insufficient warning labels on the product might have been the origin of these claims. Fosamax would have not been used if the information about these Fosamax side effects were available. This is coming from the many affected users. Unfortunately, many of these people have already suffered a Fosamax femur fracture and they are seeking help through a Fosamax lawsuit. Through this recovery lawsuit, the ones responsible for the sufferings they have gone through will compensate them fairly for the damage.
