subject: Size Does Matter (for Removals Vans Anyway!) [print this page]

If youre planning on moving house in the coming months youll probably have started your preparations already, or you will have if youre the organised sort. There are a million and one things you need to think about when youre moving and all of them need to be spot on if you want everything to go as planned, the most important of which obviously is sorting out the van hire.

So you definitely shouldnt do what I did and try and move out without a proper van. When I say proper van I mean one thats of a decent size a manly van, a van that can handle the goods, shall we say. I dont mean the van that I ended up with, which was more like the runt of the van litter.

It all came about because I was rushing my pre-move preparations, because Im not the organised sort. I left my planning to the last minute, actually the night before, and just didnt read the details on the website.

Never, I say NEVER, do this. Never make any of the aforementioned mistakes; otherwise youll be living in your new house without any of your sizeable furniture, which includes your bed, wardrobe and sofa. If you dont want to sleep on the floor on your first night in your new home follow these golden rules:

Plan in advance

Yes, I know you have a lot on your mind already, but booking your moving van way in advance is a good idea. Youll get the pick of the crop that way, and youll be able to change your mind about the van size if you want to. Also, it just gets it out of the way so its one less thing to think about.

Bigger is better

Book the biggest van possible. Even if youre certain youll never need a van that big, book it anyway. Worse comes to worst youll just be able to move all your stuff in one go, which isnt bad at all really, is it?

Call the van rental company

If youre still unsure about which van youll need to hire, just give the van company youre planning on using a call or drop them an email. They wont be annoyed with you for asking and theyll probably be able to solve your problems all in one go.

Dont stress out

This one doesnt really apply to van hire, just moving house in general. They say moving is one of the most stressful things youll ever do, second to divorce, or something like that. Just try and chill out when youre moving. Take it all in your stride and dont dwell on it if something does go wrong.

So, the moral of this story? Plan ahead! Moving home is stressful enough without the added worries of something going wrong, so give yourself at least a week to allow for any changes in schedules or unforeseen circumstances.
