subject: Anatomy And Physiology Quiz For Exam Success [print this page]

Anatomy and Physiology is the study of the human body and how it functions. Most syllabuses divide the body up into different systems, for example, the reproductive system or the muscular system. You must learn dozens of difficult terms and definitions including bones, body structures, tissues, muscles, glands and so much more. Due to the amount of work involved, anatomy and physiology exams can be a very worrying time for students.

I have been teaching anatomy and physiology for the last 7 years and have found that having a large set of revision questions is the best way to learn this difficult subject. With anatomy and physiology, it is vital that a student's knowledge is continually tested and using these questions is an ideal way to achieve this.

Multiple choice questions are the best type of questions to use when learning anatomy and physiology. They majority of examining bodies use this format for their exam papers so it is a good idea to follow the same format. With multiple choice questions you get four possible answers and you must choose only one. I have included some examples below;

1. Ostruction of the lymphatic flow causes;

a) Atherosclerosis

b) Oedema

c) Blood clotting

d) Hodgkin's disease

2. Pulmonary circulation is the transport of blood;

a) From the lungs to the heart

b) From the heart to the upper and lower body

c) From the heart to the lungs

d) From the lungs to the heart and back again

3. What endocrine gland produces mineralocorticoids?

a) Adrenal cortex

b) Thyroid

c) Adrenal medulla

d) Pituitary

Using an anatomy and physiology quiz guide is another essential addtion to a student's revision plan. The most important quiz categories that should be included in the guide are;

1. True or False

2. Fill in the Blanks

3. Short Answer Quiz

4. Crossword Puzzles

5. Word Search Puzzles

Quizzes are a great way to learn and can take the 'boring' out of anatomy and physiology. Quizzes and puzzles are designed to be repeated as many times as it takes for the student to complete the anatomy and physiology quiz without having to look at their class notes. Online interactive quizzes are becoming more popular as starting a quiz over again happens with one click of a button.

I always advise my students that the best way to approach this subject is to complete the questions and quizzes over and over again. For example, take one system at a time, such as the nervous system, and quiz yourself on this area until you are confident. Pick a number of questions from your large question bank, write them out on a record card and learn them throughout the day. A good way to see how much progress you have made is to examine what you have learned at the end of that day. The next day take another 20 questions and learn them. Continue this process for the week. You will be amazed at how much you learn in that short week just by following this simple method.

Studying the body systems in a particular order is the best way to learn anatomy and physiology. The best chapter to start on would be the cell and tissues. Not only does the body first begin as a small cell but it is also one of the most difficult areas to learn in anatomy and physiology! The skeletal and muscular systems should be learned together as some bones and muscle names are similar, always start with the skeletal system. Study the circulatory and lymphatic systems together as it explains the flow of blood and lymph. There is also a lot of overlapping with the endocrine and reproductive systems so it is a good idea to learn these together.
