In 1912, two hundred representatives from different industries and the government gathered in Milwaukee, Wisconsin to organize a body that would promote occupational safety in industries across the United States. Called the First Cooperative Safety Congress, this was followed by another congress in 1913, and the establishment of the National Safety Council in 1914. Close to a century after, the National Safety Council remains a stalwart advocate of the preservation of human life in the modern technological and industrial age.
Making Our World Safer
The National Safety Council is a non-profit organization geared towards public service. While it engages in joint efforts with the government, NSC is independent of the government and is entirely non-political. Its headquarters is currently located in Itasca, Illinois.
Chartered by Congress in 1953, the NSC is governed by a Board of Directors and a Board of Delegates representing more than fifty thousand member businesses, hundreds of labor organizations, schools, public agencies, private groups, and individuals, most of whom are volunteers from the industry. Its motto, Making Our World Safer, reflects the NSCs commitment to preventing unintentional deaths and injuries at work, homes, and communities, and heightening public awareness to safety through leadership, research, education, and advocacy.
NSC Focus Areas
Research conducted by the NSC revealed several areas where safety is at risk; these areas now form the NSCs targeted areas where it intends to make the largest impact when it comes to accident prevention and safety awareness. Here are NSCs focus areas and how it responds to each:
Occupational Safety
The NSC is an advocate of safety in the workplace, working closely with the Department of Labor and the OSHA thru occupational safety trainings, defensive driving for road workers, and emergency care. The NSC also called attention to multinational corporate leaders and federal safety experts to join forces in the establishment of an Off-the-Job Safety Symposium to reduce unintentional deaths and injuries that take place off the job.
Traffic Safety
The World Health Organization lists road traffic accidents as the worlds leading cause of death and injury by unintentional means, claiming more than a million lives annually and injuring millions more. The NSC offers a Defensive Driving Course in response to this alarming number of needless casualties. First offered in 1964 in New York and New Jersey, the Defensive Driving Course is now offered in local chapters of NSC.
Particular focus is also given to the growing number of deaths among teen drivers. NSC launched its Graduated Driver Licensing which was proven to reduce teen driving fatalities by 20 to 40 percent. GDL educates drivers to higher crash risk situations and arms them with knowledge on how to reduce risks such as nighttime driving and driving when fatigued.
Aside from this, the NSC also advocated for fleet safety through conferences that called for international cooperation to ensure that workers are protected while on the road.
Home and Community Safety
As a member of the Department of Homeland Securitys Citizen Corps, the NSC launched its Emergency Care Services program in 1991. This program now has more than 8 million rescuers trained to respond to emergency situations and provide first aid services to injured individuals. NSC also takes part in the Falls Free Coalition, an advocacy for spreading awareness of falls (the leading cause of injury-related deaths among older adults) and prevention. NSC is also the World Health Organizations designated Affiliate Safe Communities Support Center and Safe Communities Certifying Center for the United States.
The NSC spearheads the annual National Safety Month celebration every June. During the month-long celebration, the NSC promotes awareness and safety to the public in each of its focus areas. It also holds an annual NSC Congress and Expo.
