subject: Enjoy Your Vacation Knowing Your House Is Safe [print this page]

When you are on vacation, you want to escape from your everyday worries. After all, thats the point of taking a vacation in the first place. You want to put all of your workday stress aside and enjoy spending time with your family. But, if you are constantly worried about the safety of your house and property while you are supposed to be on vacation, you are defeating the purpose of getting away. As such, it is important for you to consider your home security before you leave for the airport. Here are a few suggestions that home security system companies agree will make your house safer while you are gone.

Believe it or not, one of the biggest mistakes you can make when going on vacation is to leave a key outside of your home. In fact, you shouldnt even do this when you ARE at home. Criminals are trained to know where to look for spare keys, and people dont really get all that creative when it comes to hiding them. Under the welcome mat, in a potted plant, even in a fake rock are all places burglars know to look for an extra key. And once they have it, they also have free reign in your house. If someone needs to get into your house while you are away so he or she can water the plants or take care of your pets, give that person a key before you leave.

Do not tell everyone you know that you are leaving for an extended period of time. Keep it just between your family members and your closest friends. Dont post your vacation status on Facebook and dont leave a message on your voice mail greeting saying that youll be gone for a while. It is too easy for unscrupulous people to take advantage of this information.

Place a hold on your mail and your newspapers or have a neighbor pick them up for you. Lock all of your doors and windows and ensure that your garage door is disabled so that people cant hijack its signal. Put your interior lights on a timer so that your house appears inhabited even when it is not. You might also set a television or radio on a timer too, so that sounds can be heard if someone is listening at your door.

One of the most important actions you can take is to make sure your home security system is armed when you leave. Tell your company that you are going on vacation and for how long. You should also provide them with your contact information and that of another person who is local in case an emergency occurs.

By following these simple suggestions, you can make your house more secure when you are on vacation so that you can actually enjoy your time away from home.
