subject: Wastewater Purification At The Cottage [print this page]

This starts to be the final moment when the owner of the summer cottage (in Finnish, mkki) should start to think how to make a wastewater purification system at his summer cottage. From the year 2013 onwards, all real estates in Finland, including summer cottages, must have wastewater treatment system in use.

Estimations are that there are still about 450 000 real estates in Finland that have no proper sewage system in use. The amount is huge, and will most likely to create a construction boom for the summer 2013. Wise cottage owner starts the planning phase now, and does the installations needed on next summer.

There are several ways to do the wastewater purification. The most heavy weight option is to install system that works at the same way than a big wastewater treatment plant. This system is based on bio-chemical purification: from the water collected, living micro-organisms purify the organic matter, and chemicals used remove phosphorus. The downside of this system are costly price purchasing and installing the system costs about 10000 euro and the need of constant use. If the system is not used for about two months, micro-organisms start to eat each others and will cause the system malfunction.

Another possibility is to detach feces and urine from the water used for washing. This is possible if there is no need for a flush toilet in the cottage. In this case, a composting toilet is used, and bathing water is purified with the help of filtering systems. This system is lighter and cheaper than the bio-chemical system. For filtering wastewater purification system there is no need to dig the system under the ground either. Water filter system can be placed directly on the rocky site as well.

The filter based water purification system is simple and ecological to use. It is based on biology: The pipe will lead waste water inside the device from the top. Inside the filter there are ten cassettes full of moss. Water flows slowly from the top cassette to downer ones, and microbies of the moss purity the organic materials, as well as phosphorus and nitrogen, from the water.
