subject: Commercial Aspects Of Voltage Transformers [print this page]

It is often said that AC or alternating current is one of the most fascinating electrical aspects (and beneficial as well). The entire setup of an electric grid works via the alternating current wherein it allows the altering of voltage parameters as per the requirements. As in, increasing the voltage for the purpose of distribution, and that too cheaply and decreasing the voltage to cover the safety aspects. In actual, the best part of alternating current that is alteration of voltages is handled via an electrical transformer.

Transformers increase and decrease the voltages for electric grids. And apart from voltage transformers there are many other devices which offer such capacity of voltage alteration but transformers are preferred because of the following aspects:

A voltage transformer is more efficient within the same capacity based scope of voltage alteration.

More importantly, transformers are more reliable; reliability is the most important aspect of the working of an electric grid.

Lastly, transformers may appear huge but they are cost effective to the extent of being dubbed as: low cost.

Running on the Faradays law of induction, Voltage Transformer get classified via the 2 extents of voltage alteration. Voltage transformers which increase the voltage are known as step up voltage transformers (similar to step up converters), same way the other type is the step down voltage transformers (in the similar league of step down voltage converters which are utilized to decrease the voltage.

As the decrease of voltages is done for safety purposes, so the step down voltage transformer segment helps us to keep our homes safe. In addition, voltage transformers are used for 2 major purposes as follows:

Smaller voltage alterations for household devices

Large voltage alterations for bigger commercial entities

In places where the standard say is 110 V and the availability is 220 V, transformers are used to decrease the voltage and vice versa. Smaller voltage alteration applications include electronic devices like computers, TVs, radios, printers, ovens etc. Electronic devices manufactured in United States, Canada and Mexico have a voltage requirement of 110 volts while European countries have standard voltage requirements (for devices) as 220 V. This difference in voltage is compensated via transformers.

Examples of very high voltage alterations are some x-ray machines, power plants etc. Apart from household purposes, a good number of transformers are used for heavy electric grids where the play is in thousands of volts (megawatts of power). For an example, a general power plants voltage coming out of a generator is around 15,000 volts and it needs to increased around 500,000 volts and with less energy losses. Even here, the big commercial transformers are used for their efficiency, mostly in cases of long distance transmission.
