subject: Packing Books For Your Move [print this page] Most of us have some books that are worth packing and taking with when moving to a new location. Some have an entire library in their homes, while others may have a smaller collection. Books have a way of accumulating very quickly without one even realizing it. For the most part, they are rather inexpensive and are extremely valuable learning tools. So it's nothing to have a collection of 20 or more books.
The funny thing about books is that most of us only read them once or twice, only to then collect dust. But we like to keep them around anyway, in the event that we will read them again or simply because we enjoy them so much. Some books also just have sentimental value that makes them very tough to get rid of.
Regardless of why we keep them, properly packing them is important to make sure that they stay in good condition while being transported.
First and foremost, take an inventory of all the books you currently possess. This process is easier if they are all in one location. But some people have books spread out all throughout their homes. Decide which books you would like to keep and take with you.
Before you begin packing books, always use boxes that are sturdy and in good condition. New boxes are best, since you know that nothing has ever been stored in them before. Books can get damaged rather easily, so buying quality boxes is a good start.
Books range in size, weight, and material. Larger books can take up a lot of space and make a box very heavy rather quickly. Be sure that you don't pack your heaviest ones all together in one box. Not only could the weight be too much for the box, but it will be that much more difficult to carry.
When packing hardcover books, they can be positioned in the same way as they are on shelf with the spine up against the side.
Paperbacks on the other hand should be placed flat inside the box. Doing so will prevent the pages, binding, and cover from being damaged.
The books that require extra protection can be wrapped in packing paper or bubble wrap. It also helps to use cardboard or a divider of some kind to isolate each book so they don't shift around.
Label the boxes so that the moves know that books are inside. Avoiding stacking book boxes, as doing so could cause them to collapse and cause a lot of damage.
