Top 5 Christmas Markets - Europe 2011
[print this page]
The start of the 2011 Christmas season is well under way and soon
it will be the time to do that last minute shopping. Christmas
markets are famous throughout Europe and you can usually pick up
something different. Today I want to give you some of my favorite
markets to visit throughout Europe this festive season.
Austria - Schnbrunn Christmas & New Year's Market
This enchanting market will take place from the 19th of November
to the 26 December. Typical Austrian style and a romantic style
village the market is full of glittering lights and Christmas
feeling.
There are over 75 market stalls selling Christmas lights,
decorations and handmade gifts. Take a ride on one of Austria's
famous horse and carrages through the cobbled streets followed by
Austrian wine and the sound of the choir what better place to get
in the mood for Christmas.
Denmark - Tivoli Christmas Market
To get a true flavor of the Danish festive season head over to
the Tivoli Christmas Market. Surrounded by beautiful scenery,
good food and plenty of shopping. The market venue is ideal for
last minute shopping, dinning in one of the 20 restaurants in
downtown Tivoli and having a good time.
Whilst in Denmark make sure you get to try "gl'gg & bleskiver" a
traditional spiced wine accompanied by cakes with jam. Yummy.
Starts from the 11th Nov and ends 29th Dec.
Germany - Lubeck Christmas Market
In the heart of the old town of Lubeck more than 400 stalls and
stands are set up each year for the fantastic magical Christmas
market Germany is famous for.
From Christmas decorations, gifts and great food it is also
famous for the yearly Fairy Tale Forest where 500 illuminated fir
trees shine from a distance. My favorite buy is the marzipan
cakes and sampling some of Germany's finest cuisine. Open from
21st Nov to the 30th Dec.
Switzerland - Basel, The Christmas City
If you are heading to Basel in Switzerland you are in for a
treat. Known as Europe's Christmas city it has to be one of the
most exciting festive trips you will go on. Attractive and a deep
rooted tradition of the city is well worth a visit. The warm
feeling of Christmas lights fill the streets with over 100 pine
trees decorated.
The shops and restaurants also blitz up with the Christmas lights
and the shopping is every shopaholics dream. Specialized
Christmas shops sell everything you could think of for Santa
sacks and stocking fillers and you can even go on guided
Christmas tours. Open from 24th Nov to 23rd Dec.
UK - Leeds Caribbean Christmas Fair
Leeds known to be the United Kingdoms financial city comes alive
this time of year. The Caribbean Christmas Fair lets you forget
about the UK weather with streets full of stalls selling crafts,
gifts for the kids, giveaways and competitions.
Wine, liqueurs and different menus for you to try makes this
Christmas market a great day out for the whole family. Don't
forget to visit Santa whilst visiting. Dates this year are the
26th and 27th of November.
Leeds also holds the famous Christkindelmarkt (German market)
Open From the 11th Nov to 18th Dec in the Millennium square.
