Properties of Potassium permanganate and Methyl Dichloride (Dichloromethane)

Potassium permanganate or KMnO4 is mainly used for controlling odors, tastes, biological growth in treatment plants, removing colors and also to remove manganese and iron. The secondary use of this chemical is for formation of THMs and DBPs. This is done by oxidizing precursors and this also reduces the demand for various disinfectants. It is considered as highly reactive substance and also oxidizes various organic and inorganic substances. Potassium permanganate is used in treatment plants. This chemical is added to the water intake in the rapid mix tank with coagulants. This oxidant is also added in direct filtration plants to increase the time of contact in the upstream of the filtration units.

This chemical is used for various disinfection processes and also for reducing the pathogen activity. This is widely used in industries where water is required. This destroys the enzymes of the pathogen also cause direct oxidation of the cells. Application of this chemical also helps in precipitation of compounds like manganese dioxide. Mircroorganisms are removed from the portable water with the help of these chemicals. The oxidation of the organic materials is observed due to alkaline nature of these chemicals. The bactericidal property of this chemical is enhanced at high temperature. Several virus are destroyed with the help of this chemical. It is effective in treating polio virus. This chemical also acts as skin protectors. Eczema, fungal infection and dermatitis can be cured with the help of this chemical.

Methyl Dichloride (Dichloromethane) is another type of chemical which is easily available in the market. It is also known as Methyl dichloride. It is an organic compound. It has no color and smells sweet. It is considered as widely used solvent. It is not miscible in water but is miscible with various types of organic solvents. Henri Victor Regnault first prepared it. He isolated the chemical compound from the mixture of chlorine and chloromethane that was exposed to sunlight.

Methyl Dichloride (Dichloromethane) is generally found in various aerosols and different pesticides. This is also used for manufacturing photographic film. This is prepared from wood alcohol and also from methane gas. This type of chemical compound is released from various industries in the form of gas as an end product. There are various manufacturers from where one can easily get these products. Most of these products are manufactured properly following various industrial standards. Precautions are taken for storing and manufacturing these chemicals.
