Hygienic and easy-to-use facial masks may just prove to be a beauty staple in a career womans 24/7, on-the-go lifestyle. A less fussy approach to skincare is the inspiration for Karuna, a brand of DIY facial treatment masks founded by Linda Wang, from Taiwan, in 2009.

Herself a working woman, Wang epitomizes the brands East-meets-West philosophy. She was born in Taiwan but spent most of her years growing up in the US, moving there at age 10. With a fashion merchandising degree from the Ohio State University under her belt, she has established, for the past 12 years or so, a career in fashion and beauty. Working for different brands allowed her to travel frequently in different places, including Taiwan, where she became more familiar with Asian skincare, especially on natural plant ingredients found in Asia. She then came up with the idea of bringing the benefits of Asian skincare into the US. I think Im so busy most of the time that sometimes, I forget to have time for myself. So the idea behind Karuna is to help you balance your lifestyle and what better way to do that than applying a facial mask that could help you relax, right? In Karuna, we use Eastern ingredients that are hard to find and combine them with Western technology. The products are very easy to use, and are convenient and affordable.

By developing no-mess, do-it-yourself facial masks, hopes to give women portable products (ideal for travel, spa, and gym) that address skin concerns in an easy manner (just put a mask on your face for 10 to 20 minutes, take it off, squeeze the remaining essence from the mask and apply it on your face and neck, no need to rinse after). Some variants include: Anti-Aging (with Wild Yam and Elderberry to improve collagen renewal and skin elasticity), Exfoliating (contains Lemon citric acid and Pineapple extract to exfoliate and hydrate skin), Anti-Blemish (with Shiso, Ginger, and honey to fight bacteria and provide oil-free hydration), Brightening (with Grapefruit seed extract and rare Asian plant extracts to protect skin from environmental damage and help even out skin complexion), Hydrating (with Natto, a Japanese soybean, which helps dry skin through exfoliation and maintenance of the skins natural moisture levels), and Anti-Oxidant (with Chinese Green Tea and African Chrysanthellis to slow down skin aging and shield the skin against free radicals).

All variants also have the signature Karuna Beauty Boost: a propriety blend of Chinese licorice, aloe vera, chamomile, vitamin B, and other plant extracts to heal, detox, and renew all skin types. Each mask is also made from a wood-pulp material, which allows more moisture absorption by allowing pores to fully dilate and drink in the [masks] beneficial ingredients.
