A lot of employers of unarmed guards do not have any certain educational requirements. For armed guards, employers usually desire persons who are high school graduates or who hold an comparable certification.

Before applying as an armed guard, it would be advisable to obtain a permit to legally carry a weapon.

Many employers give newly hired guards instruction before they begin the job and provide on-the-job training. The extent of training guards receive varies. Educating is more rigorous for armed guards because their employers are lawfully responsible for any use of force. Armed guards get formal training in areas such as firearms retention and laws covering the use of force. They may be sporadically analyzed in the use of firearms.

An increasing number of States are making ongoing training a legal condition for retention of licensure. You may receive training in many areas that relate to your job. Specialized training in first aid, protection and even public relations can be a part of your job description.

These guidelines propose that security guards take at least 48 hours of training within the initial 100 days of employment. The guidelines also advise that security guards be required to pass a written or performance examination involving topics such as sharing information with law enforcement, crime prevention, handling evidence, the use of force, court testimony, report writing, interpersonal and communication skills, and emergency response procedures. In addition, they recommend annual retraining and extra firearms training for armed officers.

Certain employers choose to hire security guards with some higher education, such as a law enforcement science or criminal justice degree. In addition, there are alternative programs and courses available at some post-secondary schools that focus specifically on security guards.

For example, guards at power plants experience several months of training before going on dutyand even then, they perform their responsibilities under close direction for a significant span of time. They are taught to use firearms, administer first aid, operate alarm systems and electronic security equipment, and spot and deal with security predicaments.
