subject: How To Curl Your Hair [print this page]

If your goal is a head of beautiful, cascading curls, all you need is the right technique. Creating youthful, vibrant spirals is easy, just find a good quality curling iron and dedicate a little time to the styling process. For best results, dont hurry through the curling process, take your time and enjoy salon quality results as a reward for all your efforts.

Remember, you can create different types of curls depending on the size of the curling iron barrel and on the curling technique. For thin, spiral curls, use a narrower barrel and select thinner sections of hair. For fat curls, use a larger barrel and choose thicker sections of hair, or if you prefer long, lush waves, use the same kind of barrel, just spend less time holding each section of hair around it.

Now, just follow these steps to create the curls you want:

Wash and condition your hair, then apply a thermal protectant as a safeguard between your hair and the hot barrel. Comb your hair to work out the tangles and to distribute the protectant properly. Your hair should be completely dry before starting.

Turn on the curling iron and select a lock of your hair. If you own a spring curling iron, open the clip and clamp it over a lock of hair thats roughly half an inch in thickness. Do this as close to the root as possible, or if you prefer, along the middle if you want the curls to start lower. Slide the curling iron down to the ends of your hair, but dont allow it to slide off completely.

Curl your hair in the direction you prefer, rolling the barrel until you reach the top, or middle, holding it there for 10 seconds. Gently start to uncurl your hair until youre able to unclamp the clip of the iron without your hair keeping is closed. The slower you do this, the longer the curl will hold. Ease the curling iron out of your hair.

Pin up the newly created curl with a clip to keep it in place and only let it down when it has completely cooled. Doing so will ensure that the curls shape will be set.

Repeat all the steps with the rest of your hair. Lastly, use your fingers to tousle the curls and make them look more natural. Finish off with a light application of spray to set the style.
