In May we saw the release of the Samsung Galaxy S2, a handset that offered the highest specification possible from a mobile device. As a result of this the model quickly became one of the best selling phones of all time. We have recently seen a new HTC device released named the Rhyme. This mid range phone offers a specification comparable to what the once top of the range Galaxy S2 offers. Here we take a quick look at these two models to see which handset comes out on top.
Looking at the screen technology offered on both of these devices there is little to choose between the two models. The HTC Rhyme sports a 3.7 inch display which uses the impressive S-LCD technology that has been developed by Sony. This capacitive touchscreen offers a great pixel density of 256 per inch thanks to its 480 x 800 resolution. Along with this the model is capable of displaying a massive 16 million colours. The Samsung Galaxy S2 uses a different screen technology in the shape of Super AMOLED. This is arguably the best format available thanks to its incredibly vibrant colour reproduction and natural dark colours. The Samsung offers the same resolution of the HTC but this time on a larger 4.3 inch display which results in a lower pixel density of 217 per inch. Despite this drop in quality the Super AMOLED screen more than compensates and comes out on top in this area although in fairness there is little to choose between the two models.
Another area where these model both impress is with their speed thanks to the powerful processors that they employ. The HTC Rhyme uses a single core chip but one that is very powerful at 1Ghz. This processor forms part of the Qualcomm MSM8255 chipset that the phone uses which also incorporates a great Adreno 205 graphics processing unit to help the phone present stunning video playback and gaming. The Samsung Galaxy S2 raises the stakes in this area by using a more powerful dual core processor. This 1.2Ghz chip has obvious benefits for multi tasking and is part of the Exynos chipset. Although the S2 is technically a much faster phone the Sense user interface used by the Rhyme does offer very efficient power management meaning that it is not far behind the Samsung for performance. Connectivity on both models is very good with both supporting 3G, GPRS and EDGE for speedy internet access whilst on the move and WiFi for the ultimate speeds when a connection is available. The Samsung does offer a little extra in the form of WiFi direct which enable simple synchronisation between other devices when connected to the same network.
There really is very little to choose between these two phones. Although the Samsung Galaxy S2 does slightly overshadow its rival it is worth remembering that it is one of the flagship models in the Samsung range whilst the HTC Rhyme is a phone designed to compete with some of the more reasonably priced models in the market place. When you consider this point it actually performs much better than it should against a highly esteemed rival.
