Studies show that lower back pain is the most common ailment that affects majority of the people. Around 80% of the population suffers from some type of lower back pain. Though for most types of lower back pain there are no proper treatments except some back care tips and exercises, the saddest part is that nobody really cares about it. Most people consider it as an occupational hazard that they cannot escape from. But the fact of the matter is if no proper measures for back care protection are implemented it can become a chronic and recurrent pain.

Types of Lower Back Pain

The area between the bottom of the ribs and the top of the legs is referred to as the lower back. The different types of lower back pain are

1. Non-specific low back pain

Non-specific low back pain is the most commonly found back pain. It is not a serious problem or disease but in this type of pain, it is very difficult to diagnose the proper cause and location of this pain. In some cases, sprain and strain are found to cause this type of pain. Though referred to as simple back pain the severity of the pain ranges from mild to severe.

2. Nerve Root Pain or Sciatica

This type of low back pain occurs when the nerve that comes out of the spinal cord is irritated. As a result, the person feels pain along the course of the nerve. Therefore, there would be pain in the buttocks, leg, calf, or foot and in certain cases, even numbness or weakness.

3. Cauda Equina syndrome

It is a rare disorder that occurs when the nerves at the bottom of the spinal cord is irritated. This causes lower back pain and affects the normal functioning of bladder and bowel. Urgent treatment is required for this syndrome.

Arthritis, Osteoarthritis, Ankylosing Spondylitis, Rheumatoid Arthritis, are the other types of lower back pain. Bone disorders, tumors, infections, and pressure from structures near to the spine also result in low back pain but the chances for its happening are quite rare.

Treatment

For lower back pain especially in the case of non-specific low back pain and nerve root pain, the best way for getting back pain relief is to continue with normal activities. Regular exercises and staying active also help in back pain relief.
