It's a nightmare when you buy something with your hard earned cash, and then manage to damage it, or spill something that will stain on it within weeks of owning your prized possession. Follow these helpful tips to minimise disaster!

If you have spilled red wine on the carpet or your upholstery, then try adding a little soda water to the stain. It gets out red wine a treat! If its coffee that has made its way onto your fabrics, dab with glycerine and then sponge with cold water, trying not to get it too wet. If your children have spilt blueberry juice, then soak it in a sour milk rinse, and wash with warm water.

If the candles dripped on your table cloth at your last dinner party, then scrape as much off as you can when it's cold. Place blotting paper over what left and iron it, absorbing the hot wax with the blotting paper. This should remove as much of the wax as possible.

If it's your carpets that have taken the brunt of the stain, you can sort this out easily too. If ketchup is the problem, use the glycerine step for coffee, but wash with warm water, trying not to get the carpet too wet as it will deepen the stain. If soot is the issue, then Hoover up as much as you can, sprinkle talcum powder onto the floor and re Hoover.

Make sure that you have a valid Contents Insurance policy to protect your belongings.
