subject: English Carling Cup- Manchester United Out Of The Fa Cup After Losing Against Leeds United [print this page]

Manchester United, one of the most powerful teams in England, was eliminated in the third round of the FA Cup after losing 1-0 at home against Leeds United. Leeds is the leading team in the third division of the English League One tournament. The team relied on the outstanding performance of Argentine midfielder Luciano Becchio, who had an incredible game.

Both teams came in with good runs, but in different worlds. Manchester had won seven of their last nine games in the top flight, while Leeds had been unbeaten in 15 games - 12 victories in the Third Division.

After just 19 minutes of the first half, striker Jermaine Beckford scored the first and only goal for Leeds and the game. With this goal, the fans at the Old Trafford Stadium were shocked into silence and the Manchester players thrown into confusion.

Behind in the score, Manchester tried a quick offense to search for a tie. But Leeds, with a well-build defense, were able to resist their opponents, although they did not make any attempts of their own.

The second half was a nightmare for Manchester United, who couldn't score despite having Wayne Rooney, Dimitar Berbatov, and Antonio Valencia. The English Premier Champions weren't at their best, and Manchester coach Sir Alex Ferguson compounded the problem by depriving his team of deputies, with the exception of Rooney.

The experiment could not get worse. Obertan, Wellbeck, Berbatov, and Anderson couldn't maintain the level needed, while Leeds, which was sweeping League One, played incredibly.

At the end, as the minutes passed, Manchester United was left unable to react and finally lost against a Leeds that showed great talent. The game ended 1-0, with the elimination of the 11-time FA Cup champions Manchester United and the joy of the English One leaders.

Ferguson said that he was disappointed with the performance of his team, which had practiced well during the week. He did, however, express hope that his team would leave this loss behind and focus on the next matches in the Premier League.

"The preparation for the game was very good, but I'm shocked by the performance. We didn't start right and Leeds did start right. They fought like tigers, and we expect that with any team coming to Old Trafford for an FA Cup tie. It's a disappointment. We have to get this result out of our system as quickly as possible," said Ferguson.

On the other hand, Leeds coach Simon Gryson said he was shocked with how well his team executed the game plan and pleased with its performance.

"Full credit to the players who were outstanding today but it's what they've been like all season. We gave ourselves an opportunity to go and win the game from there and with a bit of luck here and there we've hung on. I am sure they will be celebrating in Leeds for the next few days," said Coach Gryson.

This loss marked Ferguson's first defeat in the third round of the FA Cup, the oldest domestic tournament in the world, since he started at United 24 years ago.
