subject: Pet Owners Must Undertake Home Improvement Projects Before Selling Homes [print this page]

For most people, owning pets is part of the American Dream, and many people feel as though their pets are just as much a part of their family as all of the humans are. Its easy to see why millions of Americans have pets, but there are some drawbacks to being a pet owner. A lot of people dont realize it, but having a pet live in your house can wind up costing you a lot of money. Pets often cause a lot of damage in houses, which means that homeowners have to undertake some essential home repair projects before they can sell their houses to move anywhere else.

If you own a pet, then youll probably need to replace your flooring when you move out of your house. Many pet owners have to replace their flooring multiple times while theyre still living in the same house because it can get so bad. Puppies and kittens that arent potty trained often cause the greatest amount of damage, but older pets and pets that dont get outside often enough can cause a lot of damage as well. If you have pets that wind up going to the bathroom inside your house on a frequent basis, then you will absolutely have to replace your flooring as a home renovation project before you ever put your house on the market again. Instead of waiting that long though, youll want to replace the flooring as soon as you detect any odor that you arent able to get rid of with basic carpet cleaner.

Fortunately, home improvement experts will tell you that there are a number of different kinds of flooring that you can put in to try to protect your house. If youre looking for something that you can do temporarily while you allow your pets to run around your house freely, then its a good idea to think about the most affordable materials out there. Things like tile and linoleum are good options because theyre easy to clean and dont absorb liquids or odors like carpet does. Even if you decide that you want to put expensive hardwood floors in as part of a home renovation, you may still be able to keep them protected from your pets. When you invest so much time into your house, youll want to be sure that it isnt going to go to waste and be torn up right away. The easiest way to protect your new flooring is to simply restrict your pet to certain parts of your house. You can either close the pet in specific rooms by shutting the door or putting up a child gate that is bigger than the pet. Alternatively, you can think about keeping your pet outside when you arent home. You may even want to put some small booties on your pets paws to keep them from scratching your new floors so you dont have to worry about potentially having to undertake another home improvement project if your floors get scratched.
