subject: Geothermal System Design [print this page]

At GeoPro Design we offer a full geothermal system design, from ground loop sizing to implementing and commissioning the GSHP into the existing distribution system in Spain and England.

Our geothermal consultants offer innovative system design solutions for projects on both a commercial and residential scale. Our team work very closely with development managers, architects, property owners, engineers, and contractors to assist in the design and implementation of geothermal projects.

After initial consultation, our project engineer will survey the site and decide which ground loop configuration suits the project the best. If a closed loop system is utilised, then the length of the pipe required depends on the buildings heat load, soil conditions, loop configuration and climate data. Sizing the ground loop is critical. The more pipe used in the ground loop, the greater the output of the system, but as costs associated with the ground coil make up 30% to 50% of the total investment, over sizing would be uneconomic. Conversely, under sizing, would lead to the ground loop running colder and could at worst result in the ground temperatures not been able to recover and heat extraction from the ground being unsustainable - its therefore important that the ground loop be sized to meet the peak thermal requirements but also to deliver energy at no greater rate than the surrounding earth can collect energy over a 12 month period. If the system provides heating and cooling, then energy transferred to the ground during the summer can be used in the winter.

The following are a list of typical geo exchange options that our designers will consider:

Vertical bore ground Loop:

Single pipe configuration.

Double pipe configuration.

Coil configuration.

Horizontal configurations:

Slinky loops.

Horizontal trenches.

Pond loops.

Open loops.

Structural/pile loop configuration.
