subject: Side Effects Of B12 Injections [print this page]

Fish, dairy and meat are three main foods that are rich in vitamin B12. For those people who have a B12 deficiency, consuming these foods just is not enough. Prescription grade injections are provided for these individuals and, if used correctly, this solution will give them the boost they need. Unfortunately, if not administered correctly, the side effects of B12 injections can be particularly unpleasant.

These injections are usually prescribed for people who struggle with anemia, fatigue or general vitamin B12 deficiencies. Because these shots are aimed directly into the muscle tissue of the thigh or buttock, they can be quite painful. In addition to the pain, some general unpleasant conditions have been reported by long term users of these injections. Nausea, diarrhea and other stomach problems are quite common. Joint pain and headaches have also been reported. In addition to this, mild swelling all over the body has also been experienced by a significant number of patients.

Serious medical problems, while less common, do occur every now and again. These side effects should be reported to the doctor immediately as they could inevitably lead to something much worse. Chest tightness and pain (similar to what one would experience during a heart attack) although rare, could occur as a result of sensitivity to the B12 injection. Heart palpitations or a speedier heartbeat could also be caused by the shot. Rapid weight gain has also been reported in a few cases.

Side effects of B12 injections can also include muscle pain, weakness or cramping. This occurs because the solution is injected directly into the muscle tissue. Frequent urination and an almost constant feeling of thirst can also be caused by these injections. To top it all off, dizziness and confusion can also occur along with a tingling sensation throughout the body.

Individuals taking these shots should be aware that they may need to tone down on strenuous exercise. Light to moderate exercise is acceptable but going overboard could cause shortness of breath, or even just a general difficulty in breathing. Coughing and wheezing after and during exercise can also occur.

Unfortunately, these B12 shots could also have adverse effects on the skin. Hives, itching, blotches or rashes could appear on the legs or arms while swelling and tenderness are not entirely uncommon either.

In order to avoid these side effects, patients should take the time to consult their doctor regarding the herbs, vitamins, minerals, or dietary supplements that need to be avoided. Alcohol and various different antibiotics could also cause unwanted reactions.

As always, a little bit of research goes a long way in avoiding dangerous physical problems.
