subject: Five Minutes A Month For Tire Safety! [print this page]

Do you have five minutes a month to dedicate to your tires and your vehicles safety?

Its all it takes to do your part (P.A.R.T.).

P for tire pressure. Get out the tire pressure gauge to properly check your tires. A visual

inspection will not do the trick. Did you know a tire can lose half its air and still not look

flat? Studies have shown that running tires with too little air pressure is not

uncommon. It's been estimated that about one out of every four vehicles on

the road is running on underinflated tires. This also means that one out of

every four drivers is needlessly sacrificing their vehicle's fuel economy and

handling, and reducing their tires' durability and tread life.

A is for wheel alignment. Hitting a pothole or bump in the road can throw off the cars

alignment. Misaligned vehicles will experience pre-mature wear to the tires. Tires that

are out of balance can also lead to pre-mature tire wear. Ask your auto mechanic at

Adirondack Tire to evaluate whether your vehicle needs a computerized four-wheel

alignment and/or wheel balancing. Its a good rule of thumb to have an alignment done

when purchasing a new set of tires to protect your investment.

R is for rotation. The guideline for rotation is recommended every 5,000 miles unless

your vehicles owners manual recommends otherwise. All tires purchased at

Adirondack Tire come with free tire rotations every 5,000 miles for the life of the tires.

Keeping the rotations to every other oil change helps maintain a regular maintenance

schedule.

T is for tread. Your monthly tire inspection should include a visual check of the tread

and the penny test. Place a penny in the tread of the tire and if you can see Lincolns

head the tread is too low. Tread that has excessive wear or unusual wear will not

perform in adverse conditions. Check for bumps, bulges or patches of smoothness.

Consult your tire experts at Adirondack Tire with any questions or concerns with your

vehicle.
