subject: How To Re-cell A Laptop Battery [print this page]

Laptop batteries contain individual cells comprising a lithium ion battery. After a few years, the battery may begin to lose charge, and one way to cure that is to re-cell or replace the laptop battery. Laptop batteries are expensive to replace and in some cases cost nearly half the price of the computer. Replacing the cells is a less-expensive option. If replacing the cells fails, you might have to replace the battery anyways.

Unplug the laptop cord from the electrical outlet and let the laptop run on the interior battery until the charge is gone. Power off the laptop and place it face down on an even surface. Locate the latch on the battery cover on the bottom of the laptop. Slide the latch to one side to open the battery cover and remove the battery. Write down the model number printed on the HP Pavilion dv7 battery case with a pencil and paper.

Slide the tip of a flat head screwdriver in between the seams on the battery case. Apply firm downward pressure on the handle to open up the battery case. Pry until the top section of the case comes off.

Count the number of cells so you know how many to replace. Write down the voltage information and part number located on the cell cases with a pencil and paper. Draw a diagram of the positions and alignments of the existing cells so you can install the new ones the same way.

Purchase the correct number and type of replacement cells from an online or local electronics dealer. Use the TOSHIBA PA3356U-2BAS battery model number as a guide.

Snip each metal battery contact with wire cutters and cut the cells out of their plastic casings with a craft knife. Save the metal contacts for the new batteries. Slowly and carefully cut out each cell with the wire cutters and craft knife. Set the parts aside.

Place a metal contact along either end of one new battery and solder it to the end of another new battery, following your diagram. Solder the new batteries together in pairs.

Place the new cells inside the hard case that contains the circuit board, referring to your diagram. Glue the battery pack to the hard case. Allow the ACER TravelMate 6293 battery to charge for at least 24 hours before you use it in your laptop for the first time.
