New York is an extremely busy place, filled with people commuting every day to their jobs, schools, or home. I"m used to walking pretty much everywhere because driving in northern states is not an option, unless you want to sit in traffic for hours just to get down the street. Coming to Miami for the first time opened my eyes to see a metropolitan city with so much room to walk and drive. I was astounded to see the types of transportation they have here, trains that don"t run underground but on top and the amount of buses they have here as well, but what really blew my mind were the personal transporters they have called Segway rentals in South Beach.
I"ve heard of them before and saw people riding them on youtube videos, you"ll never find these Segway in Miami Beach because frankly, there is just no room anywhere to ride them, you"ll only find them in malls which the security guards use to ride around. I"ve always wanted to try one out, I even asked the security guard once as a joke and he told me to keep dreaming. Finally being in South Beach on my vacation I have a chance to try these mystical machines out, I always asked myself how they balanced themselves; I"ve seen some huge guys ride on these things and always wondered if it was safe.
I was at the beach playing some volleyball with some friends and saw a group riding down the boardwalk on the Segway Miami, I went up to them and starting asking them questions about the machine, it ends up they are a family from New York, and the same city as me too! They were just as curious as me about the Segway and they explained to me that I could rent them at a company called Half Price Tour Tickets. Lucky for me they had an extra brochure; the company didn"t only rent Segway in South Beach but bicycles as well, and have a wide selection of tours.
They pointed me in the direction, I finished my volleyball game and won, asked the people that I was playing with if they wanted to join me on my Segway adventure and they were totally down for it. We all went back to our hotels to change up into casual clothes and met at the store, when I walked in the store looked amazing, filled with all kinds tourist needs, wonderful souvenirs, skates, wake boards, surf boards, bicycles, and many more.
The 5 of us rented Segway for 1 hour for a cheap price, we got our training by this pretty girl, she was an expert at riding the Segway"s and showed us how to do it one by one. In 10 minutes we all knew how to ride them pretty well and we were off, they recommended us to go down the board walk and showed us where some nice parks are. We covered most of South Beach and even met up with the same group from before. They showed the cool spots to ride around, the beach, Lincoln Road the outdoor mall was the best area to ride.
The weather that day was just perfect, and with the comfortable maneuverability of the Segway it couldn"t have been better.
